Matières Fécales SS27: “Ninety Nine Percent” Takes Over Place De La République In A Historic Runway Spectacle

A Subversive Public Takeover In The Heart Of Paris

In an industry traditionally defined by velvet-rope exclusivity and private salon presentations, provocative design duo Steven Raj Bhaskaran and Hannah Rose Dalton of Matières Fécales staged a revolutionary intervention at Paris Fashion Week SS27. Choosing the iconic Place de la République, a public square historically associated with civic protest, political rallies, and public discourse, the brand hosted the first-ever official fashion show held at the historic location.

Titled “Ninety Nine Percent”, the outdoor presentation served as a direct conceptual follow-up to their controversial previous collection, “The One Percent”. By taking their runway out of private venues and into the open public square, Matières Fécales transformed Paris Fashion Week into an inclusive, raw, and politically charged cultural moment.

While their earlier work critiqued the absurdities and detachment of the ultra-wealthy, “Ninety Nine Percent” turned its spotlight onto marginalized global communities, underground queer culture, immigrants, and those historically excluded from the halls of luxury fashion.

Steven Raj Bhaskaran, who draws heavily on their South Asian heritage, infused the collection with subverted traditional elements. Classic Indian saris were deconstructed and reimagined alongside hyper-futuristic footwear, distressed leather jackets, punk-inspired hardware, and ethereal feather gowns. The garments represented a triumphant reclamation of identity, transforming street-level reality into high-concept art.

The casting for “Ninety Nine Percent” was as radical as the location itself. Featuring a lineup of 99 models composed entirely of people of color, non-binary performers, and underground artists, the runway celebrated human diversity in its most unapologetic form.

Models navigated the open-air cobblestone runway surrounded by thousands of onlookers, blending invited fashion editors with everyday Parisian pedestrians. The aesthetic spectrum ranged from extreme prosthetic modification—a signature hallmark of Matières Fécales’ alien-like visual identity, to meticulously tailored, wearable outerwear that demonstrated the duo’s maturing technical skills in garment construction.

The significance of the event was further validated by the arrival of global icon Rihanna, who sat front row to support the independent label. Having previously elevated Matières Fécales by wearing their custom designs on high-profile red carpets, Rihanna’s endorsement highlighted how major cultural figures are increasingly turning toward subversive, independent creators to define the future of fashion.

Despite delays and the logistical challenges of hosting a massive public event in central Paris, “Ninety Nine Percent” emerged as one of the most emotionally resonant and memorable shows of the Spring/Summer 2027 season. Matières Fécales proved that fashion can serve as a powerful medium for social commentary, community building, and artistic freedom without compromising on artistic integrity.
